There's Gold In Them There Hills! Lead And Gold Review

I played Lead & Gold on the PS3 for a wile, so I got to know the game rather well. Usually playing a game for such a period of time would get boring, but funnily Lead & Gold didn’t, though I don’t know if I could say the same for the lone ranger style of gamer.

Lead & Gold is a multiplayer only third person shooter, based in Western Gold Rush times. It has a few game modes and 4 different character classes to choose from, each with their own speciality of weapons and unique abilities. There’s the Blaster class, a “tank” of a class armed with a shotgun and has the special ability of throwing dynamite.

The Deputy class, armed with a repeater rifle and has a special ability to spot/tag players on the opposing team, a lot like BF: BC2’s spotting ability, for other players to hunt down and kill then. The Gunslinger class, armed with only a heavy revolver and has the special ability of “Fanning”, which is basically to unload the 6 rounds of the revolver as fast as you can and tap R1, and then there is the Trapper class who’s armed with a sniper rifle and has the special ability to lay bear traps. Each class, excluding the Gunslinger, has a side arm which is smaller and less powerful than the Gunslingers revolver.

Each class also has a special effect in-game, to promote the use of each different class, in the form of a “synergy” effect, which basically increases a point on all the other players depending on the class someone else chooses. An example of this would be in a multiplayer map, a Blaster class and a Trapper class are walking about with each other, the Blaster radiates an effect boosting the defence of both players and the Trapper radiates an effect increasing the critical damage/hit rate for both players. This provides a level of tactical decision when it comes to matches. Though it has 4 classes, a couple more would have been nice.

As for game modes, there are 6, with each being fun in their own way. Shoot out is basically classic team deathmatch. Jump straight in, pick a class and try and kill as many people as you possibly can. Fool proof really and very fun.

There’s the Greed game mode. Both sides are to steal gold and try and get more gold than the opposing team before the timer stops. It can get very messy in Greed, but again, very fun.

Conquest was a favourite game mode, as you can completely destroyed every team you came up against for a good 2 hours. Conquest is basically a territory style game mode, where the team have to take over points in alphabetical order, A to C, or A to E and proved to be the most fun, in my opinion.

There’s also the Robbery game mode, with the attacking team having to get kegs of TNT and destroy a safe, steal the gold and get it back to their base, whilst the defending team have to stop at nothing to prevent the attacking team from getting anywhere near the safe to begin with.

The final multiplayer (5v5) mode is Powderkeg and is a destruction game mode. The attacking team have to take kegs of TNT to points and detonate them, destroying areas on the map whilst the defending team tries to prevent this.

There’s also a 2 player co-op mode called Gold Fever. This mode is like robbery, but against NPCs and it goes on as long as you can survive. Not being very good at third person shooters, I only got to $140, as it gets really intense round about the $100 region. Each bag of gold is worth $10.

Graphically this game is fine, with nothing majorly wrong with it. It looks like a sort of western style Team Fortress 2 game, combined with cartoons. The audio is nice too. The gun sounds are pretty fitting with the weapons and I’d say the music was fitting too. The game features an EXP system, though it doesn’t actually level you up overall, just per match. So it’s not like Call of Duty, you don’t gain anything except leaderboard rankings from EXP and to be honest, that is kind of refreshing.

Gamersathome score 7/10
